The Unfortunate Truth About Pixel Demon's: REALM

If you haven’t seen one of the latest successful projects to hit Kickstarter; Pixel Demon’s: REALM, you can do so here.

I don’t speak much about my Christianity (and yes, I’m going there). But, this is about my truth when it comes to Pixel Demon’s: REALM.

So, why don’t I bring up my faith, you may ask? Because, really if you’re not Christian, I know you likely don’t want to hear me talk about it and I’m not here to judge you.

But, regardless of your beliefs, I felt like it’d be interesting to explain a common internal struggle I deal with dozens of times a year.

So let’s look at Pixel Demon’s: REALM for example.

It has pretty much everything I love about games.
1. Great art and ascetic.
2. Great style and personality.
3. “Spooky” theme (probably my favorite of all themes - along with fantasy!)
4. Unique gameplay

So, what’s the issue? Well, being an avid gamer, it’s not uncommon for me to play games involving demons and the like. Sometimes, it’s a pause for reflection for me, but obviously with Pixel Demons, it relishes in this dark imagery, with pentagrams, and basically anything “anti-Christian” you can think of, if you were trying to go for those themes.

As a Christian and an avid fan of the spooktacular, this is a really weird spot for me to be in. Imagine the Venn Diagram for Christianity and Halloween, it’s such a tiny tiny sliver for the center, especially when it comes with tabletop games for me to enjoy! But hey! That’s part of the reason why I’m a game designer and why I’m working on a fun spooky-themed card game, called Ghoullotine!

But, before you hate on me, thinking I’m lambasting this project, I’m not.

If I were, I wouldn’t link it up top and right here as well. I truly think this game looks amazing, both from a mechanics perspective and ascetics perspective.

So, why am I linking it? Well, while it personally goes against my beliefs and what I feel comfortable with, it doesn’t mean that you’d feel the same way about it. I want people to have the freedom to make their own choices and I wish the creators of this project nothing but the best of luck!

As always,

Stay Awesome!
